Thank you for your interest in submitting to She Wants to Tell You: The Stories of Women Inspired and Influenced by the Beatles. This is a non-fiction collection of essays in which women will tell their stories of being inspired by the Beatles (just like the title implies). Make your chapter personal. Is there a certain song that caught your attention? A particular album that fires your creativity? A certain Beatle that inspires you? Did they get you through a particular time in your life or change the way you see the world? Did they affect your personal style in some way? Did you go into a professional field or start a hobby, side hustle, or social media account because of the Beatles? Tell the world!
Please email editor Jan Fennick at janarchy@gmail.com (please put “Beatles Anthology” in the subject line) to inquire about availability and to pitch your essay idea. Give as much detail as you can about what you’d like to write.
Deadline
Once given the go-ahead by Jan, you will have six weeks to submit the first draft of your essay. Jan will give you feedback on it, and you’ll have another four weeks to do any rewrites or make any corrections needed. Again, this will be case-by-case; if an extension is needed, we will be as flexible as possible.
Page Set-Up
Please submit your essay in a Word document.
- Font: Cambria, 12 pt.
- Single space
- No space between paragraphs
- Justify alignment
- First line indent – 0.25
Content
Each essay should be 1,000 – 2,000 words. Exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis. If you feel you need more than 2,000 words, please let us know and we’ll discuss it with you.
Feel free to be creative with your submission. It doesn’t have to be a traditional essay. Do you want to conduct an interview with someone? Or possibly interview your younger self? Do you want to include an original recipe for a Beatles-inspired dish? Do you want to provide an analysis of a song structure? Either way, make it personal; we want you to tell your personal story in prose (No fan fiction or poetry though, please!)
Album titles are Title Case in italics; song titles are Title Case in quotation marks (A Hard Day’s Night; “Here Comes the Sun”).
PLEASE quote lyrics sparingly. A line or two here and there should be covered under Fair Use. Extensive use of lyrics, though, will not be accepted. Your essay should be about you or your subject matter, not about the Beatles’ lyrics.
Rights
You will hold the copyright to your essay. kOZMIC Press will hold exclusive publishing rights to your essay for a period of five years. No portion of your essay should be republished in any other form or publication during that time, whether online or in print. After that period, however, you are free to republish your essay elsewhere.
Compensation
As we are a small press, and as proceeds from this book will be donated to charity (charity to be determined), we aren’t in a position to pay each contributor. We do, however, greatly appreciate your submission, as each one adds to the quality of the book and therefore to the amount we’ll be able to donate. However, you will have the option of purchasing copies of the book at a 50% discount off the cover price. There will be no limit on the number of copies you may purchase.
